Deva Premal and Miten's Free Meditation and Mantra Journey

If we are friends on Facebook, you may have noticed that I shared a link for this free meditation journey on my wall. Although the 21-day journey has already begun (as of 4/23), it is not too late to sign up and join in.

Deva Premal and Miten are singers, song writers, performers, and teachers who travel around the world giving concerts and leading workshops based on chanting or kirtan. This form of meditation involves singing ancient Sanskrit mantras. Sometimes the chanting takes the form of a call-and-response format, perfect for leading large groups in song. All the chants are very repetitive so they are easy to learn and follow.

Deva Premal has the voice of an angel. Her recordings are sublime. I often use her music during my yoga classes. Their chants are soothing and healing, the sounds themselves creating a deep, resonant sense of peace. Adding your own voice to the chanting further deepens this experience.

If you have been searching for an easy way to add meditation into your daily life, I highly recommend signing up and trying this 21-day journey. It is so simple to sit in front of your lap top or with your I-Pod, close your eyes, and allow yourself to be led through a very short mantra meditation. When you try the first session, you will listen to a brief introduction to chanting which explains a bit about the power of the mantras. Then you will have an opportunity to chant along with Deva and Miten for a few minutes. The sounds are heavenly.

If you have never chanted before, you may discover a whole new way of practicing meditation. The chanting is a way of focusing and quieting the mind, as well as creating healing vibrations with the sound of the voice. Of course, it is still possible for the mind to drift away during the chanting, but I find that having a physical and mental task to accomplish helps a lot in keeping the mind present. If you love to sing, then chanting will click instantly with you. If not, you may still discover the joy in letting your voice resonant with the mantras.
