Foam Roll and Stretch

Are you physically active but still experiencing aches and pains? Are you concerned about your joints? Do you feel tight and stiff after exercising? I might have the answer to all your woes!

Beginning on Sept. 11, I will be offering a 45-minute class called Foam Roll and Stretch three times per week. If you are a local Howard County resident, you can join me on Mondays and/or Thursdays at 4:45pm as well as Fridays at 11am at the Gary Arthur Community Center in Glenwood, Maryland. You can sign up for one, two, or three times per week! These classes are available through Howard County Rec and Parks.  Foam Roll and Stretch

Foam rolling is a method of self-massage which employs a cylindrical roller. (You can purchase your own foam roller but if you sign up for my class, the foam rollers are provided.) Foam rolling is generally very safe, although if you have osteoporosis, you need to be extra careful about avoiding any rolling on your spine. (In class, we will not explore ANY rolling over the spine.) Most major muscles can be massaged with the foam roller, and smaller muscles are massaged with one or two tennis balls. (Tennis balls are also provided in my class.)

Foam rolling massages not just muscle tissue, but also fascia: the tough, fibrous covering over the muscles. Foam rolling is very effective in releasing tight muscles, and therefore can assist in relieving joint pain caused by excessive muscle tension.

As part of my 45-minute classes, we not only foam roll but also stretch the muscles once they are sufficiently relaxed. Utilizing gentle yoga sequences and deep breathing, we begin by warming the muscles and increasing blood flow. Then foam rollers are employed to massage the muscles and release tension. Then we add focused stretches to lengthen the muscles and bring balance to the body. A final guided relaxation leaves the student in a blissful place!

These classes tend to be small and allow for plenty of individual attention and guidance. A perfect choice for active people who wish to avoid injury and relieve stress by tending to their bodies. If you are considering signing up, but need more information, please leave a message below!
