Broccoli Sprouts: a SUPER Superfood!

Are you a freak for the latest superfood craze? Do you have several giant tubs of coconut oil in your cupboard? Do you have a mega-sized container of turmeric on your counter? Does the thought of a wild blueberry and broccoli sprout smoothie make you swoon?

Okay, maybe it's just me.

I'll admit it right here and now: I go gaga for superfoods. My hubby isn't usually as cuckoo as me over them, but he has jumped on the broccoli sprout bandwagon, purchased all the supplies, and started sprouting. This is because he wants to live to be one hundred.

Broccoli sprouts are the highest known source of sulforaphane, a phytochemical which has been shown to fight obesity and detoxify the body after exposure to pollutants. A powerful antioxidant, sulphoraphane can also reduce signs and symptoms of aging, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. It reduces the risk of death from all types of cancer and kills cancer cells. If you want to know TONS of information about sulphoraphane, watch this VERY in-depth video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz4YVJ4aRfg

Sprouting broccoli seeds is very easy. You just need a quart-sized canning jar, a special sprouting lid, and a tablespoon of broccoli seeds. Initially, you need to soak the seeds in water for about 8 hours. Once the seeds are soaked, you will drain them and let them sit, rinsing them twice per day (every 12 hours) for about 4-5 days. The final step is to let the sprouts green up in the sunshine for a few hours. Once the sprouts are green, you can eat them on salads or freeze them and use in shakes or smoothies. The freezing and blending to make the shake actually increases the level of sulphoraphane. My hubby and I plan to start drinking these shakes as soon as our first batch of sprouts is ready!
