Fasting

I have confessed to you in the past that I just cannot fast. And what I mean by that is I have never gone a full day without eating. I have tried, on more than one occasion, but I have always failed. So why am I bothering to write about fasting?

According to Dr. Elson M. Haas, author of The Detox Diet, "fasting is the single greatest natural healing therapy...It is nature's ancient universal remedy...used instinctively by animals when ill as well as earlier cultures."

We have been discussing the use of a detoxifying diet in order to cleanse the body of toxins from a less than perfect diet. There are many levels of cleansing, from making small dietary shifts toward more whole foods and less toxins, to using only vegetables, to juicing everything you consume. The ultimate cleansing regime is fasting. (A healthy fast always includes drinking water, at the very least.)

According to Dr. Haas, fasting is a catalyst for change. It promotes relaxation combined with higher levels of energy and focused awareness. Fasting improves motivation and stimulates creative energy. It enhances health, beauty and vitality by allowing many of the body's systems to rest. Fasting is a traditional method of spiritual purification used in numerous religions over the centuries.

Physically, fasting increases the process of elimination and the release of toxins from the colon, kidneys, bladder, lungs, sinuses, and skin. In the process, these systems are cleansed and subsequently function better. Although one might feel a little yucky initially, those sensations usually pass quickly.

All this said, fasting should not be overused. Short fasts of 1-3 days might be safe. Longer fasts should always take place under the supervision of a doctor. Longer or repeated bouts of fasting can eventually cause weakness and increase susceptibility to disease, so don't be tempted to overdo it.

If your interest in fasting is piqued, I strongly recommend you do your research in advance. I have found Intermittent Fasting to be very safe and easy to do. Longer fasts require more preparation, knowledge, and support. Get all the information you need before setting out in order to assure your success as well as your safety!
