Sugar SHOCK!

If you've been reading my blog for awhile now, this post is not going to be very shocking at all. Sugar Shock is actually the name of another book I recently borrowed from the library.

Written by Connie Bennett, Sugar Shock is designed to stun you right out of your addiction to the sugary sweets. If you have been teetering up there on the proverbial fence, hesitating about whether or not to actually face your sugar addiction, this author gives you page after page, chapter after chapter, filled with reasons why you should make like a sneaker and just do it.

Yes, those cupcakes might be yummy, but all that excess sugar wreaks havoc on every single system within your body and brain. You have heard all about how sugar and refined carbs shoot your blood sugar levels sky high. Your body then responds with a flood of insulin to bring the situation under control. (High blood sugar is an emergency. Left unattended, it can cause coma and death!) Insulin forces those sugars into fat cells for storage and just as quickly your blood sugar plummets. This roller-coaster leaves you feeling anxious, irritable, angry and/or depressed as well as hungry almost immediately after each sugary snack. Too many of these cycles, and the body will become insulin resistant. Pre-diabetes is the next step and then full blown, type-2 diabetes. If these are not scary enough for you, they go hand in hand with increased risk of obesity, heart disease, and stroke. Not to mention Alzheimer's and dementia. Studies now show that people with poor blood sugar control are much more likely to lose brain function.

But did you know our skin is also extremely sensitive to sugar intake? Acne is virtually non-existent in cultures which only consume natural, whole foods and zero refined, processed foods. Even teenagers in these cultures are acne-free. But it is not just acne!

"Sugar is exceptionally damaging to the skin," according to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, "because sugar molecules attach to collagen fibers, rendering them stiff and inflexible." This causes the skin to toughen, becoming leathery, and wrinkle. Not incidentally, sugar also causes the same kind of hardening in the arteries and joints.

Still not convinced? Diets tending toward simple sugars and refined carbs are also blamed for lack of libido and poor sexual function in both men and women. Diabetics are particularly prone to problems in this area.

The author, Connie Bennett, suffered numerous symptoms, both physical and psychological, for decades before discovering that dropping the sugar from her diet would cure every single thing wrong with her! This life-changing experience led to the publication of Sugar Shock! In addition, she founded an online support community for those who are fighting the same sugar addiction called Kick Sugar. You can check out her website for more info at www.sugarshock.com.
