Discipline

Rules, boundaries, and limitations. If you are a Dog Whisperer fan, you have heard Cesar Milan repeat this phrase many times. Possibly on every single show. I have only seen the first 3 seasons because our library hasn't purchased any of the more recent seasons of this show. I can't understand why. I am convinced that Cesar is an absolute genius. His philosophy is simple but his methods are clearly effective. Dogs need rules, boundaries, and limitations in order to thrive. We, as their pack leaders, need to provide these in the form of discipline.

The same is true for children. You know this if you are a parent.

And the same is true for ourselves. You know this if you are self-employed. Or if you have ever successfully lost weight.

Some of us LOVE rules. If you are not one of these rule-lovers, you might think I am insane to suggest such a thing. But I confess: I am a rule-lover. However, I do like to make up the rules myself.

And you can pick and choose the rules that apply to you. The rules you think will assist you in achieving your goals. And the rules you will actually follow.

I'm going to suggest a whole bunch of rules which I believe are effective and helpful for those of you who are trying to lose weight, get healthier, and increase your fitness level. Your job is to choose just one rule for yourself. Only choose a rule that you can completely commit yourself to for one full month. If you don't like any of my rules, feel free to make up your own!

*Drink at least 3 liters of water per day.
*Eliminate all trans-fats (partially hydrogenated oils) from your diet.
*Walk, jog, run, dance, hike, bike, or swim at least 1 hour total per day.
*Eliminate all refined carbohydrates: products made from flour and sugar.
*Eat at least 5 different kinds of fruit and/or vegetables every day.
*Always weigh or measure your servings of meat or lean protein.
*Get at least 8 hours of quality sleep per night.
*Spend at least 8 minutes meditating each day.
*Spend time outside every day: walking, gardening, cleaning up litter, soaking up beauty!
*Eat your meals SLOWLY. Put down your fork between each bite.
*Eat some dark green leafy veggies every day.
*Stretch your body daily.
*Sing loudly in the shower every day. Great way to lift the spirits!
*Eat a healthy, balanced breakfast every morning within an hour of waking.

Selecting just one of the rules above and following it every day for a full month could very well bring about the change you need. Something as simple as getting enough sleep can have an enormous effect on your hormonal system, resulting in less hunger, fewer cravings for carbs, and more success in losing weight. One simple rule might seem like nothing much, but test it out for a month. And let me know what happens!
