When Nothing Works

If you are a fan of The Biggest Loser television show, as I am, you have already heard this excuse a hundred times. Or more. "Nothing I do works! I just can't lose the weight!" And then you will watch these contestants proceed to simply follow a healthy eating plan and exercise for several hours per day. And like magic, they ALL lose weight. Significant amounts of weight. They all become healthier. Symptoms of asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, all disappear.

Why does diet and exercise suddenly work when these people are on the ranch?

The only difference is that they are now accountable. To more than just themselves.

All the times before that they tried to lose weight, tried to follow a diet, tried to begin an exercise program, the key word was always "try."

As Yoda would say, "No try. Do."

You know yourself. If you give yourself an option to back out, to screw up, to fail, will you take it? Will you drop out of the program? Will you give up?

What will you say to yourself to make this okay? It's my hormones? I am just built to be big? It's my genes? It's my mother's fault? I get no support from my _________ (fill in the blank: husband, wife, mother, father, sister, uncle, neighbor, friends?)

So here's the basic truth. If you want to lose weight, you already know how to do it. It is not rocket surgery. That is only a temporary fix. (Ha ha!) You know what you need to eat. And what you need to avoid. You know you have to move your body. Either you are choosing to do these things, or you are choosing not to.

So get real with yourself! No more pretending. If you want to lose the weight, write down absolutely everything you put into your mouth. This way, after a week or two, if you still are not losing weight, you can narrow down the possible dietary culprits. Weed out the excess. If you did not measure your portions, start measuring now.

Because denial is not just a river! Denial is a powerful force. And not for good.

Get real and get healthy. Let's do it together!
