Newborn Baby Steps

I guess this is pretty much par for the course, but I am trying to make some improvements in my life. And in my body. Mr. Balancing Act and I have recently finished watching a prerecorded seminar given by Kelly Starrett, inventor of Mobility WOD (workout of the day) which you should definitely check out. (www.mobilitywod.com) Kelly is funny and witty but underneath that comical exterior is a brilliant scientific mind which is constantly dissecting the way we move and trying to help us fix our problems.

And believe me, I have discovered NUMEROUS problems which need fixing.

Of course, there were all the problems I already knew about. The little injuries which have been accumulating for months, years, some for decades. I have been thinking that it is impossible to run your body as hard as I have been running mine for 50 years and not see some signs of wear and tear. Lots of signs. But according to Kelly, if we move properly, as our bodies were designed to move, there should be no breakdown. No injury. No pain. So if you are injured, you can almost be guaranteed that you were moving something in the wrong way.

And as a person who has trained this body to move correctly (she thought!) for the past 30 years as a dancer, dance instructor, yogini, yoga instructor, and now holistic personal trainer and bootcamp instructor, it is quite a SMACK in the face to realize how many mistakes I have been making. Some of them for my entire life! But I guess it is better to discover those mistakes now, and correct them, rather than face more pain, injuries, or possibly even surgeries, in the future.

Here is one example of a very small change you can make easily, on your own, without needing a personal trainer or coach to assist you. Simply correct the position of your feet whenever you are walking, standing, running, or moving in a vertical fashion. You were designed to move with your feet pointing straight ahead. Every time you take a step, (especially running!) with your feet turned outwards like a duck, you are creating some kind of damage. This turned out position is an unstable position, especially hard on your ankles, but can also cause pain in the knees, hips, low back, you name it. You might not feel the pain today, but you will definitely feel the effects of this dysfunctional position sooner or later. And this is a very simple fix. Just become aware of your feet and place them in the proper position whenever possible.

This is one of those newborn baby steps you can take to correct years of improper wear and tear on the joints. Start today by fixing those feet!
