Peri-Menopause Salad Dressing

So quick and easy! Whip it up in two seconds! Tastes great!

But the best thing about this salad dressing is the benefits for your hormones.

The key: organic flax seed oil with lignans. You can purchase this fantastic product at any health food store, Whole Foods, or Trader Joe's.

The benefits? According to Ann Louise Gittleman, author of Before the Change: Taking Charge of your Perimenopause, flax seed oil and ground flax seeds are great for all sorts of skin conditions, depression and fatigue. Flax seed supplementation exerts "a stronger anti-estrogenic effect than soy. In fact, flaxseed rivals the power of anticancer drug tamoxifen, without the adverse side effects." (p.71)

Flax seeds are nature's most abundant source of lignans. Lignans help regulate estrogen levels by escorting excess estrogen out of the body. In addition to increasing "good" cholesterol and decreasing "bad" cholesterol, lignans protect against bone loss and osteoporosis.

Once open, store your flax seed oil in the fridge to avoid it going rancid. Same goes for freshly ground flax seeds. (Don't bother eating whole flax seeds as we cannot break them down in our digestive system. Use either ground or oil, always raw and unheated, for maximum health benefit!)

Flax seed oil has a subtle nutty flavor which I really enjoy. If you don't like the taste, you could add mustard, honey, herbs, or other strong flavors to your dressing.

Ingredients:
1-2 TB flax seed oil
1-2 TB freshly squeezed lemon juice (or lime)
1-2 dashes Everything Bagel Seasoning (from Trader Joe's)
Salt and pepper, to taste

I drizzle/sprinkle all the ingredients directly on top of my baby spinach or mixed greens, then toss with a fork to blend everything. Of course, you might prefer to blend your dressing in a separate bowl and then pour it on the salad! Makes enough for one single salad.
