Meditate to Lose Weight



I've been teaching and practicing yoga for more than 30 years. I also practice Qi Gong and T'ai Chi. I foam roll daily without fail. But meditation? Not so much. Until now.

Maybe you are like me--an active type of person who isn't so drawn to sitting still and just breathing. Meditation might sound boring. I don't mind slowing down, but becoming completely still doesn't sound as exciting to me.

But what if you could lose weight by meditating? All of a sudden, the art of just sitting and breathing begins to look a bit more interesting! This is what hooked me.

Meditation has been proven to bring many health benefits to its practitioners. It is commonly used by therapists to reduce anxiety and depression. It has been shown to help veterans with PTSD. Meditation can rewire your brain for increased happiness, peacefulness, and tranquility. And it might even help you lose weight!

The best things about meditation are:

1) It costs nothing. You can do it by yourself, in your own home or office, with no supplies. If you want to access a guided meditation, you can look these up on Youtube. Also free!

2) It is easy. You don't need any special training or education to meditate. There is nothing to learn. You simply close your eyes (or not!) and breathe. You can focus on the breath, or on a mantra, or something else. The choice is yours.

3) You can do it anywhere, at any time, even while you are doing something else. You can meditate while you are sitting, standing, lying down, walking, running, dancing, singing, chanting, swimming, ice skating, rollerblading, cooking, cleaning, painting, the list is endless. You can meditate while you are driving. (Just don't close your eyes, please.)

4) It works! Meditation has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, relieve anxiety, and reduce insomnia. In addition, it may also help with healthy habits like improving your diet and losing excess weight.
