Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is

This holiday season, when you pull out that credit card, let your purchases make a difference. When searching for the perfect gifts for your loved ones, remember the causes that are near and dear to you.

How can you help others while shopping for friends and family?

Do a little research! Most causes have merchandise for sale to help raise money.

For example, last winter I purchased beautiful, high quality t-shirts for the family from local Sarasota artist Brendan Coudal. A portion of the money went to support research on red tide, a serious problem in the Gulf of Mexico affecting marine life. My family loved the unique designs!

Another cause I continue to support is 4ocean, a company that removes trash from the oceans. You can support this cause by purchasing bracelets for your family members. For each bracelet purchased, a pound of trash will be removed from the ocean. I love the bracelets--they are made of clear glass beads with a strong recycled plastic string.

This year, I remembered Rakki Inu Akita Rescue in Virginia. We have adopted 3 awesome akitas from Rakki Inu so this cause is particularly close to my heart. Kira Brown has created beautiful designs for merchandise to support this rescue. The money goes toward food and vet bills for rescued dogs awaiting adoption.

Have you found unique and meaningful gifts that benefit worthy causes? I'd love to hear about them!
